Ami
Mattison’s steamy feminist poetry penetrates
the tough issues of race, class, and gender politics,
while delighting audiences with humor and funk.
A poet, scholar, and community organizer, most recently
from Atlanta, Georgia, Mattison is currently visiting
professor of Cultural and Interdisciplinary Studies
at Antioch College in Ohio, and completing her Ph.D.
dissertation at Emory University.
An acclaimed spoken-word artist, Ami won first prize
in the Atlanta Gay Pride, Girls in the Night, 2003
Glam Slam poetry competition and performs regularly
at festivals, conferences, and art venues throughout
the country. She co-edited the anthology Not your
Mama’s Cookbook: Lip-Smacking Recipes for Raising
Hell (Kings Crossing Press, 2002,) and has been
published in journals such as Southern Voice,
Etcetera Magazine, and Clamour.
Her self-produced CD is entitled Strange and Potent
Mixture.
As a primary organizer of Ladyfest South 2002, a
women’s arts and music festival in Atlanta,
Ami met Nashville poets Minton Sparks and Kelly Falzone.
Mattison, Sparks, and Falzone have since collaborated
on Nashville projects including Green Room’s
production of Conjure Women: A Cauldron of Music,
Movement and Mouth, and shows at Lipstick Lounge
and Bongo Java Afterhours Theater.
Mattison has two co-writing credits and a featured
performance on Radical Heart, the debut CD
of songwriter, Ross Falzone, published by Poet People.
Her edgy poem, “The Crapitalist,” a hard-hitting
commentary on consumerism, is backed by Ross’
rhythmic arrangement and powerful vocal performance,
while her sassy rap in “Ain’t It A Shame”
becomes a pivotal centerpiece in Ross’ song
about the sin of complacency. Mattison plans to perform
with Ross this fall in both Nashville, and Rochester,
NY.
